Learning objectives
Objectives of the course are the acquisition of basic manual skills in microscopy and in the management of organoleptic and macroscopic quality control of herbal drugs.
Prerequisites
<p>The knowledge of basic notions of Plant Biology and Pharmacognosy is mandatory.</p>
Course unit content
Particular attention will be paid to the recognition of diagnostic markers for morphological recognition, identification and authentication of herbal drugs and powdered vegetable drugs: oxalate crystals, sclereids, fibres, starch, pollen, secretory tissues, trichomes, stomata. The main techniques in microscopy will be reviewed.

Teaching methods
The course consists of an initial part of classroom teaching followed by a laboratory. In the laboratory the concepts learned in the classroom will be applied through observation of powdered drugs, plants and fresh tissues and through the manual preparation of specific samples. <br />
<br />
The final exam (oral) will be focused on the whole program. The student must demonstrate to be able to master the basic concepts of each topic.
