Learning objectives

This unit has been designed to provide the means for correctly compiling a horse identification report: morphofunctional evaluation; identification of good points and defects in terms of the type, breed and aptitude; evaluation of plumb-lines and gaits; age determination. <br />

Knowledge of horse anatomy required.

- Phenotypic classification of coats <br />
- Genetic basis of horse coats <br />
- Distinguishing marks and their use in reporting <br />
- Other identification-related criteria: <br />
Blood types, DNA, Microchip <br />

Morphofunctional, constitutional and aptitude elements in horses; criteria and scope of morphofunctional evaluation; definition of good points, defects and flaws in relation to the aptitude type and standards of the breed; synthetic and linear evaluation; areas of the bodies: basic anatomy, good points, defects and flaws; proportions and morphological indexes; elements of animal mechanics; evaluation of plumb-lines and gaits. <br />
