Learning objectives
To provide the basic knowledge of on the structure of organic molecules, to evaluate their physical-chemical properties and reactivity, to discuss the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of organic reactions as well as to transfer this basic knowledge to the comprehension of the program of the second semester.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of general and inorganic chemistry
Course unit content

Short overview on: chemical bonding and structure, intermolecular forces, thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of a chemical reaction, acid-base reactions.
Functional groups: nomenclature, structure and physical-chemical properties of alkanes, cycloalkanes, alkenes, dienes, alcohols, alkyl halides, ethers, epoxides, aromatic compounds, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, aryl halides, nitriles, amines, phenols.
Stereochemical principles: conformational and constitutional isomers, rotation arownd the C-C bond, cycloalkanes, cis-trans isomers, enantiomeric relationship, diastereomeric relationship, epimers, stereochemistry of dynamic processes, steric strain, carbocyclic rings other than six-membered.
Study and description of organic reaction mechanisms: kinetic versus thermodynamic control, Hammond postulate, reaction intermediates, nucleophiles, electrophiles, radicals. Substitution, addition, elimination reactions, radical and heterolytic reactions, stereochemistry of nucleophilic substitution, catalysis. Solvents and solvent effects on organic reactions. Teaching methods
Two written tests during the course: one on points 1-3 of the programme and the second of point 4, integrated by a final colloquium.
The score gained in this part of the course will be integrated by that of module B of the second semester.
