Learning objectives

The aim of the course is giving the student knowledge concerning topics of General Pathology relevant for Technician of Radiology and radiotherapy. Particular interest will be devoted to the study of the inflammatory and the neoplastic processes, as well as to radiation damage. At the end of this course the student will be able to:
- communicate with accuracy;
- understand the main pathological phenomena, with particular regard to inflammation, oncogenesis, and radiation damage.
The student will thus have acquired knowledge useful to the learning of other subjects of his curriculum.

Course unit content

The lessons are designed to provide essential information concerning the pathological phenomena to be observed by a technician of Radiology and radiotherapy. Concepts will be provided on both the tumor and the inflammatory process. The effects of ionizing radiation and radiation damage mechanisms will be presented to raise the awareness of the future operators on occupational hazards.

Full programme

The inflammatory response: signs and phenomena of acute inflammation, mechanisms of exudate formation, types of exudate. Chronic inflammation and granulomas.Fever. Fundamentals of oncology: Nomenclature.Benign and malign tumors. Causes of tumors. Effects of tumors. Grading and Staging. Pathogenetic effects of ionizing radiations.

Teaching methods

The course is structured in lectures of two hours each. Each meeting will develop one of the topics described in the program with the aid of illustrative material collected in PowerPoint files that, at the end of the course, will be made available to students on Elly site (https://elly2020.medicina.unipr.it/) at the page of the course. The topic of each lesson will be discussed and the Students will be encouraged to express their observations. The purpose of the teacher is to provide students with an opportunity for information and training.

Assessment methods and criteria

The examination is written and is intended to assess, through multiple choice questions the
understanding of the information acquired.
