Learning objectives

Marc Bloch wrote a few years ago: "Misunderstanding of the present inevitably arises from ignorance of the past, but it is useless to try to understand the past if you don't know anything about the present". The theme of the context, as a fundamental schedule in which to enter and dialogue with, is therefore one of the primary objectives of the Laboratory. Indeed, the city of the 21st century will be increasingly called upon to rethink, transform and reinvent substantial parts of its building fabrics to cope with the new great urbanism underway. These interventions, however, must be fully aware of the context (historical or natural) in which they will be inserted, under penalty of loss of meaning and their consequent failure. Interventions that must essentially be socially sustainable and aware of their civil and identity role. The neighborhood communities project is also the preferred tool for all urban redevelopment interventions in recent years and their design within a historically consolidated context makes them a complete and highly current experience.

Course unit content

The architect of the 21st century must be a cultured architect and therefore in possession of those critical tools essential for understanding and managing complex processes typical of the new globalized world. The theme of the Laboratory will therefore be to design a small fabric of single-family houses on the Giudecca Island in Venice. The laboratory activities will be accompanied by some theoretical seminars whose contents will be an integral part of the final laboratory exam.

Teaching methods

In-class monitoring of student design activity together with a series of theoretical lessons constitute the basic tools of the learning experience. To these are added an intensive "In-the-field" Workshop, lasting one week, carried out on the project area and a series of exercises necessary to monitor the students' work for the entire duration of the course.
It will be possible to use, if necessary, the lessons also remotely in synchronous mode (via Teams)

Assessment methods and criteria

Exhibition of the project carried out during the academic year. The student's evaluation is carried out considering both the final result of the design experience and its application in the different phases of the project. The assessment is sufficient if the student demonstrates an acquired ability to face and solve the design theme in all its aspects, also in terms of oral presentation.
If due to the persistence of the health emergency it is necessary to integrate with the remote modality the carrying out of the exams will take place in smart mode (via Teams)
