Learning objectives
To provide basic knowledge regarding 1) thermology, thermodynamics, properties of gases; 2) wave motion, mechanical and electromagnetic waves; 3) geometrical optics and physical optics.
Prerequisites
Acquisition of the basic concepts of Mathematical Analysis, Geometry, Chemistry, Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, provided by the Mathematical Analysis AB, Geometry, Chemistry and Physics AB Courses.
Course unit content
<br />Thermology and ideal gases. Heat and first law of thermodynamics. Transformations and thermodynamic cycles. Entropy and second law of thermodynamics. Heat engines and refrigerators. <br />

General properties of wave motion and mechanical waves. Electromagnetic waves. <br />
<br />
Light. Reflection and refraction. Dispersion and prisms. Total reflection. <br />
<br />
Geometrical optics. Mirrors, spherical dioptres and thin lenses. <br />
<br />
Wave optics. Slit and thin film interference. Fraunhofer diffraction. Diffraction grating. . <br />
<br />
Polarisation by reflection and by selective absorption.

Teaching methods
The oral lectures are supplemented by problem solving exercises and by some optics experiments in the classroom. <br />

The exam consists of a written test and an oral test. <br />
<br />
If, during the course, a written test is passed, this will allow exemption from a part of the written exam.
