Learning objectives
The course will give the student a knowledge of the mechanism of text transmission and a basical competence of the steps necessary to make a critical edition. The student will be also required, in itinere, to examine some exemplar cases, in order to apply the critical notions received through frontal lessons. By the end of the course he is expected to have developed the ability to describe, evaluate and interpretate the sources of a text, use in the proper and correct form the terminology of the philological discipline and conduct authonomous research in the philological field.
Knowledge and understanding:
The student will develop knowledge and basic competence in the field of Italian philology through the lessons and the use of manuals and articles on the basic topics, as well as some tools for more advanced research.
Applying knowledge and understanding:
The student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the skills necessary for understanding and using critical editions. During the lessons students will be required to apply on concrete cases the notions learned in the frontal lessons.
Making judgements:
The student will be able to collect and interpret data to form autonomous judgement on the topics of the critical debate
Communication skills:
through the analysis of different critical proposals, students will be able to convey information, ideas, problems and solutions necessary to face and communicate philological-critical issues, using an appropriate and specific terminology.
Learning skills:
thanks to the general organisation of the course which will give the student the fundamental notions of the discipline, he will develop learning skills useful for further philological studies
Prerequisites
Good knowledge of the Italian language and of the history of Italian literature is required
Course unit content
The course introduces to the knowledge of the basic principles of the philological work. The first lessons will focus on a short history of philology, while the central part of the course is dedicated to the methodology and to the instruments necessary to make a critical edition, going through each stage: from the description of the manuscript to the collation, and the formalization of the critical apparatus, with particular regard to the most recent editions of the poetry of the XII and XIII centuries and to the critical debate on them.

Teaching methods
The activities will take place in presence During the lessons moments of lectures will alternate with moments of analysis in which the participation of the students will be solicited.
Assessment methods and criteria
The exam consists of an oral proof in which the student will demonstrate his knowledge of the main problems of the making of a critical edition and his competence on philological terminology. The questions will deal as much with the more technical and methodogical aspects as with the competence to place the texts in their historical and literary context. A fail in the exam is determined by the lack of an understanding of the minimum content of the course, the inability to express oneself adequately, by a lack of autonomous preparation, the inability to solve problems related to information retrieval and the decoding of complex texts, as well as an inability to make independent judgments. Will be considered: sufficient (18-21) the student able to manage properly the basical concepts and terms of the discipline, quite good or good (22-26) the student who demonstrates an autonomous ability of reflection, very good (27-30 with laude) the student who will have improved his knowledge for instance through the study and analysis of critical editions.
