Learning objectives
Knowledge and understanding and their applying
The course aims to provide students with knowledge on the analysis and planning of urban settlements, with the aim of making them suitable to face the analysis and use of urban planning tools. Through the use of this knowledge, students will be able to acquire skills related to the techniques used for the elaboration and implementation of the urban planning tools, being able to use them for the transformation of the existing city.
Making judgements
With this aim, students must be able to recognize, analyse and evaluate the processes of historical evolution of the city, its morphological factors and the system of centrality, the main social, economic, kinematic and environmental factors that condition its transformation processes, as well as to select the most appropriate urban techniques to solve the criticalities of the contemporary city in the perspective of sustainability and regeneration of existing cities.
Communication skills
At the end of the course students must be able to communicate the results of the analysis, evaluation and urban planning activities through the drafting of a technical-scientific report and its discussion in public.
Learning skills
The course is carried out through lectures, seminars and individual assignments. Students must be able to relate the acquired knowledge finalizing them to the application of the main urban planning tools, paying particular attention to the skills required by the cultural challenge of sustainability. They must also be able to independently find and consult the main channels for continuous professional education.

Course unit content
The course is divided into four teaching modules:
1. in the first module the historical evolution of the city in the Western context is outlined, with particular attention to the events of the cities and the Italian territory from unity to current events; in the treatment of the nineteenth-twentieth century urban evolution, mention will be made of some important disciplinary experiences in the history of European urban planning;
2. the second module is dedicated to a first learning of the urban planning legislation in Italy, with regard to the national and regional legislative articulation, and to describe existing urban planning tools, up to the simulation of practical use of the main urban planning techniques in settlement's transformation;
3. in the third module schedules of the technical definitions used in the development and implementation of planning tools will be provided;
4. in the fourth module the main themes concerning the contemporary city will be briefly proposed (urban expansion and land consumption, urban regeneration, strategies for urban and ecological-environmental quality, adaptation to climate change), highlighting methodological aspects and applications promoted in the recently approved urban plans.

Teaching methods
The theoretical part of the course will be articulated through lectures with audio-visual supports, while the technical content will be objects of discussions in a seminar format.
The application part of the course will be developed through individual assignments that will be discussed during the exam.
Assessment methods and criteria
The assessment will be carried out through:
- practical exercises through which students manifest the degree of knowledge and mastery of the topics covered in the course (analysis of planning tools);
- the final interview exam.
Final assessment will be carried out through an oral examination on the contents of the lessons.
For the assessment exam, the score will be determined as follows:
Written individual exercises 20%, divided as follows:
- diligence and task focus 5%;
- conceptual correctness and accuracy of the assessments made 10%;
- ability in graphics and statement 5%;
oral exam 80%, divided as follows:
- theoretical correctness 65%;
- property and clarity 15%.
Other information
It is recommended to attend the practical excercises that will be conducted periodically in the classroom.
