Knowledge and practice of the main hydrogeological instruments. Development and practice of the main hydraulic characterization tests of the aquifers.
Criteria and procedures in order to aquire, elaborate, and record hydrogeological data. Preliminary interpretation of the data aquired in field

Full programme

INTRODUCTION
During the first lesson, the program, its purpose and the exams modalities will be illustrated. Information on the teaching material will also be provided.

HYDROGEOLOGICAL SURVEY
It will illustrate what hydrogeological surveys means, which kind of data must be collected, in the field and in the literature, and the details associated to each scale project. The module will be accompanied by practical examples of hydrogeological works.

METEOROLOGICAL SURVEY
The instruments and methodologies for acquiring the main meteorological data (precipitation, temperature, pressure, humidity, wind) will be illustrated. The module will be accompanied by practical examples of using these parameters in hydrogeological works. At the end of the module the student will visit a meteorological station located within the Campus.
INFILTRATION, EVAPORATION AND SURFACE RUN-OFF SURVEY
The instruments and methodologies for acquiring the infiltration, evaporation and surface run-off data will be illustrated. The module will be accompanied by practical examples of using these parameters in hydrogeological works.

HYDROGEOLOGICAL PARAMETERS SURVEY
This is the main module of the course. The instruments and the methodologies for acquiring the water level, groundwater level, and discharge data will be illustrated. The student will work on experimental hydrogeological data provided by the teacher.

HYDRAULIC CHARACTERIZATION OF THE MEDIUM
The instruments and the methodologies used for the hydraulic characterization of the medium (pumping tests, Slug tests, Lugeon tests) will be illustrated. A practical pumping test will be conducted in the experimental field and the acquired data will be processed and interpreted.

During the course, hydrogeological experimental data will be provided concerning a specific study area. The student has the task of elaborating and interpreting them to arrive at the drafting of a hydrogeological report. Work will take place mainly in the classroom, under the supervision of the teacher.

Teaching methods

The course will be divided into basic lectures aimed to acquiring knowledge on the main hydrogeological techniques and practical lessons, focused on the presentation and discussion of different case studies.

The slides used to support the lessons will all be uploaded to the Elly platform at the beginning of the course. To download the slides, the student needs to be register for the online course. The slides are considered an integral part of the teaching material. Non-attending students are reminded to check the didactic material available and the information provided by the teacher through the Elly platform.

The basic lectures will take place in person with the possibility of using the online lessons uploaded on the Elly page of the course
The practical lessons will take place in person.

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation involves two moments: the practical test and the oral discussion.
The practical test consists in the presentation of a hydrogeological report, drawn up by the student with data provided by the teacher which will be processed and interpreted by the student.
The practical test is evaluated with a scale of 0-30, depending on the correctness of the application of the methodologies presented during the course and the correct processing and interpretation of the data provided.
The oral discussion consists in the presentation of the written test in order to verify the complete control of the techniques, instrumentation and methodology to be applied in complex hydrogeological studies.
The oral discussion is assessed with a 0-30 scale. “Cum laude” are awarded in the case of achieving the maximum score on each item to which the mastery of the disciplinary vocabulary is added.
The final evaluation will correspond to an average between the written and oral tests.
In-person exam. If - due to the persistence of the health emergency – will be necessary to integrate with the remote mode, the exam will take place as follows:
- Sending, via email, the day before the oral exams, the hydrogeological report in word format
- Oral discussion of the report via Teams
