Learning objectives


Knowledge and ability to communicate
The objective of the course is the consolidation of the fundamental acquisitions for the correct and complete description of the constructed object and its components, for the purpose of its exhaustive and articulated representation

Expertise
Through the verification of the correct use of the computerized design tools, the ability to apply the acquired knowledge will also be verified, using the advanced computerized design tools, which will be illustrated and used during the course.

Autonomy of judgment
Upon passing the exam, the student must have developed the ability to critically evaluate which tools and techniques of representation are the most suitable in the graphic rendering of the survey and the project of specific characteristics of architecture and civil engineering.

Communication skills
Through the overview provided on the most common parametric design, three-dimensional modeling and graphic editing software, students will develop, through the choice of a specific drawing program, the ability to describe and communicate the place, the architectural space and the spaces at various scales. their components, through the application of knowledge of the representation techniques inherent to the new advanced digital instrumentation of the design.

Learning ability
The assignments assigned, on the relief and on the project, expressed in the final required works, are intended to consolidate the student in the correct use of the representation methods and in the use of the most advanced computerized design programs: the student should have acquired the knowledge and competences of the discipline to face, in the future, a deepening and autonomous application of these aspects.

Good knowledge of the use of Autocad and regulatory principles

Course unit content


The objective of the course is the consolidation of the fundamental acquisitions for the correct and complete description of the constructed object and its components, for the purpose of its exhaustive and articulated representation. The aim is pursued through the knowledge of the architectural and urban environment in order to understand and describe at various scales the place, the architectural space and their components, through the development of knowledge of representation techniques, especially those inherent to the new digital instrumentation of the design, applied both to the existing building and to the newly built one.

The course is divided into two modules that will take place in parallel.

In Construction Design 1st module (6 CFU), borrowed from the course of digital modeling of architecture held by prof. Chiara Vernizzi during the Master's Degree in Architecture and Sustainable Cities, the lessons will take place through the analysis of the instrumentation and of the project's own design procedures: from the sketch to the digital model, addressing the various phases of the construction project (design, planning, definition and construction of the architectural object) and the related representation techniques and graphic and model syntheses, retracing the whole process by applying the main concepts to an agreed building.
Through the presentation of the most widespread computerized parametric design and three-dimensional modeling programs, the digital technologies for information processing will be illustrated with the purpose of representative integrations, exploring the potential of some parametric graphic software dedicated to architecture (BIM) , and analyzing the codes and graphic conventions to be used with these tools in the context of the representation of the executive project.
In Building Design 2nd module (6 CFU), held by prof. Andrea Zerbi, the lessons will take place through the identification of the correct mode of reading and representation of the architecture, its paths and environments. In particular, attention will be focused on the existing architecture, leaving ample room for the relief, intended as the most suitable scientific instrument for the knowledge and understanding of architecture built in its ideational, formal and technological-constructive components.
In order to provide students with the indispensable tools for understanding the course contents, after having addressed the theoretical and methodological aspects of the disciplines concerned through some ex-catedra lessons, the students themselves will be asked to carry out the survey of a building and the following computerized graphic representation at 1:50 scale.

Teaching methods


The program is carried out by identifying the correct reading and understanding of the built environment through the representation of its components, meaning the design as a means of documentation and study for the documentation of the architectural and urban context.
In the lectures the role of representation for the management of the survey and of the project is analyzed, from the conception phase to the realization phase, carried out on some architectural applications agreed with the lecturer.
For this reason, after having dealt with the theoretical and methodological aspects inherent to the architectural survey, the students will be asked to realize the direct relief of a building and the subsequent computerized graphic representation in 1:50 scale.
The lessons will continue through the analysis of the instrumentation and the procedures proper to the design of the project: from the sketch to the digital model, addressing the various phases of the construction project (conception, design, definition and construction of the architectural object) and the related representation techniques and of graphic and model syntheses, retracing the entire process by applying the main concepts on an agreed building.
Through the presentation of the most widespread computerized parametric design and three-dimensional modeling programs, digital technologies will therefore be illustrated for the processing of information with the purpose of representative integrations, drafting both important and project documents through the choice of one of the software presented.
At the end of the lessons and in response to the topics covered, it will be required to create a series of tables that provide for the application of the concepts learned in relation to the principles of the representation of the relief of a building previously agreed with the teacher (it is possible to carry out this first exercise also in small groups, for 2 - 3 persons) and in the design of a building, related to the theme identified in the current year, according to the indications received from the lecturer (this second exercise is to be carried out individually).
The building elements represented, related to both exercises, will be composed in graphic tables in A1 format (84 x 59.4 cm), placed horizontally, (subsequently printed in reduced form - A3 - and bound with a metal spiral to form a file which will constitute documentation of the work done and as such will be withdrawn from the teaching staff).
The representation technique to be used for the realization of the final tables to be presented for examination in relation to the project design (to be submitted to mandatory revisions by the lecturer), is necessarily that of the computerized design, expressed through the use of a software parametric choice of the student.

Seminars related to issues of city history, architecture, survey, project and archival research will be held by external specialists to make the educational path more precise and articulated.

Assessment methods and criteria


The exam consists of the presentation of the relevant graphic and project documents drawn up on the agreed themes, considered as evidence of the training carried out as a critical capacity to select the most appropriate representation techniques and an oral exam having as subject the topics covered during lectures and seminars.
