Integrated course unit module: GENERAL AND HEALTH PHISICS

Learning objectives

The course aims to allow the student to know how to use some dosimetric quantities in relation to the physical laws concerning the interaction radiation interaction with matter. The course also aims to provide the student the knowledge about the italian legislation on ionizing radiations and radiation protection.

The course is also devoted to allow the student to know and correctly use the environmental and personal protection equipment.

Peculiar applications and examples will be releted to the medical and industrial field.

The student will use the gained knowledge and understanding in the daily relationship with the the employers, in relation to the risk assessment in the different environments and workplaces.

Course unit content

The first lessons concern the definition of physical quantities such as Absorbed Dose, Effective Dose, Equivalent Dose and their application, in relation to the interaction of ionizing radiation with matter.
This subject is treated in the Health Physics module.
The three principles of radioprotection will then be illustrated, starting from a historical poi of view and then framed in the current legislation.
Italian Legislation DLgs 241/00 and 187/00, concerninrg radiation protection.

The second part of the course is focused on the presentation of environmental and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) . The last part will concern how different types of radiation detectors as well as personal and environmental dosimeters work.

Full programme

Ionizing radiation risks: external exposureand internal contamination: Outline of the history of radiation protection. Biological effects of ionizing radiation. Radiation protection assumptions based on the available data. International Commission of Radiation Protection (ICRP) recommendations. Dose limits.
Italian legislation: DLgs: 241/00. adiological Protection Principles: Justification; Optimization; Dose Limitations; Dose Limitations;
Fulfillment of the employer and the supervisor; Main Tasks of the Qualified Expert; obligations with regard to the health and safety of workers. Classification of Radiation Areas : Controlled Radiation Area – Supervised Radiation Area –Categories of exposed radiation workers. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). Dosimeters and PPE and specific dispositions.
Characteristics and uses of Radiation Detectors; Gas-filled detectors; Photographic emulsions; Thermoluminescence dosimeters; Environmental dosimeters; Personal dosimeters.

Bibliography

Lecture Notes; Atoms Radiation and Radiation Protection (James E. Turner ; Willey-vch Verlag GmbH &Co.KGaA).

Teaching methods

The aims of the course will mostly be achieved with lectures and whenever is possible in laboratory

Assessment methods and criteria

The achievement of the course aims is proofed by a written examination.
Using open-ended questions about the contents of the course it will be determined whether the student has achieved the goal of knowledge and understanding of content about Italian legislation as well as about the most important dosimetry radiation Units
Through questions it will be determined whether the student has also achieved the aim of applying the knowledge acquired to comprehension of environmental and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) as well as of radiation dosimeters.
Students could also take the oral exam, if it is required.
