Learning objectives
The specialized teaching of Italian Philology will allow students an understanding of the critical methods of philology and of the criticism of the variants applied to one of the most important text of the Italian tradition.
Applied knowledge and understanding:the
students will be able to apply the knowledge and understanding necessary to use critical editions in the field of author philology. During the lessons students will learn to confront themselves with concrete cases in order to put into practice the notions received.
Autonomy of judgment:
students will develop the ability to interpret data useful for determining independent judgments in the critical debate on the discipline, and to evaluate the various reconstructive and representative proposals of the critical editions addressed.
Communication skills:
thanks to the analysis and comparison of various critical-interpretative proposals, students will be able to organize information, ideas, problems and solutions necessary to face and communicate philological-critical problems in the field of author philology and criticism of variants.
Learning skills:
thanks to the general layout of the course that provides the basics of the discipline, students will develop learning skills necessary to complete autonomously, further philological studies.
Prerequisites
A good knowledge of the history of the italian language and of the history of italian literature and fundamental notions of Italian philology are required.
Course unit content
Manzoni 1821-1827. After an introduction to the methods and purposes of author's philology, the course will be dedicated to the philological study of the various redactions of the Promessi sposi and of The Storia della Colonna infame.

Bibliography
All the students are required to study the following texts:

2. G. Raboni, Come lavorava Manzoni, Roma, Carocci, 2017;
3. P. Frare, Leggere i Promessi sposi, Bologna, Il Mulino, 2016. Besides, the complete reading of the Promessi sposi in an edition of your choice is required.

Teaching methods
In the first part of the course the frontal lessons of introduction to the discipline will be accompanied by the reading and transcription of autographs and delineation of the critical apparatus. The monographic part will be dedicated to the reconstruction of the Manzonian work path between Fermo and Lucia and edizione ventisettana.
Assessment methods and criteria
The final exam will consist of an oral interview in which the student will have to demonstrate a basic knowledge of the methods and purposes of author philology, of Leopard's Canti and of its critical editions and in particular of the texts analyzed in class. For attending students the evaluation of the presentation will be part of the final judgement. A student who demonstrates deficiencies in the knowledge of the literary context or in the methodology of philology will not be considered sufficient. A student proving basic knowledge of the fundamental concepts will be considered sufficient (18-21), a good (22-26) or very good (27-30 cum laude) evaluation will come in proportion to the ability of autonomous elaboration.
