Learning objectives

The course aims at offering the student a literacy on architectural materials, building materials and construction techniques, whether they are traditional or more recently adopted by the construction industry. Considered as the initial phase and as the foundation of the grammar and the design syntax, the architectural materials are presented both in their historical and evolution of use.
Particular attention is then dedicated to the theme of eco-sustainable design with insights into the recyclability of materials, their energy content of production and concepts such as L.C.A.
among other objectives are:
1_ the Acquisition of the necessary knowledge of the production and implementation techniques, of the technological performances, of the environmental sustainability characteristics of the main building materials for their correct use;
2_ the Acquisition of a critical capacity that allows to evaluate the congruence between technological choices and functional needs of building materials;
3_the Acquisition of an operating methodology in order to highlight, interpret and subsequently manage the links between building techniques, regulatory requirements, criteria of environmental and ecological compatibility of materials for architecture.

Prerequisites

Being a basic course of the first year, specific prerequisites are not required

Course unit content

Architectural materials considered as the foundation of the grammar and the design syntax, will be presented in a way that proposes them both in their historical and territorial use, thanks to some study cases of remarkable architectural works. Monographic lessons will focus on specific issues and materials' applications.
The analysis of progressively more complex construction elements in their application or production phases are also commented through case studies.

Teaching methods

The teaching methods are divided into lectures and involve the participation of external actors and construction production figures that will hold monographic seminars on materials or components.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam includes a preliminary exercise - optional - dedicated to the critical analysis of the environmental performance of some remarkable architectural cases in which it is an appropriate application of the materials can be identified.

The exam is then completed with a written test.

Other information

The complete bibliography and the detailed program of the course will be made available in the first days of lessons.
