Learning objectives

Students will become aware of the contradiction of contemporary penal sphere, in relation to current social dynamics, as well as of the mechanisms of safeguard of human rights.

Course unit content

Prison, since 1980s, has turned into a place of collective incapacitation for the marginal groups of Western Society. This transformation followed a change of socio-economic dynamics. A more and more insecure and fragmented society reflects its quest for community into a securitarian demand. Imprisonment nowadays includes also immigraiton removal centres, prisons like Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib, Police Stations, Renditions. A permanent exclusion of inmates makes room for their systematic abuse. This module will propose a comparative study on penology, focusing upon the production of deviance, exclusion, abuses, and the mobilization of civil society for the rights of inmates.
