Learning objectives
At the end of the course students should be deeply familiar with legal concepts which are the basis of Private International Law and know ways of understanding the developments in the judicial cooperation in civil matters in the context of the “Communitarisation” of Private International Law;
be able to analyse and correctly apply international treaties and European Union instruments in various Private International Law matters,
be able to examine national, international and European Union jurisprudence in various Private International Law matters.
Prerequisites
Students of Political Sciences are requested to have already passed the exam of Principles of Private Law, International Law, European Union Law and Private International Law.

Course unit content
The purpose of the course is to study thouroughly private international relations, furthering the basic knowledge gained by students through the general course of International Law. Different branches of Private International Law will be examined: specific subjects related to Italian civil jurisdiction, to the application of private international law and to the enforcement of foreign judgments, taking into particular consideration the most recent developments of the cooperation in civil matters within the European Union (such as family relations, successions and wills, non contractual obligations).

According to the interests of the students, specific legislation of the European Union will be analysed and related materials will be distributed during the courses.
Teaching methods
The course will be conducted by oral frontal lessons and by seminars consisting in anlysing sentences and practical cases, with the direct participation of the students. If the number of attending students is manageable, students will have the opportunity to present papers, either individually or in team, on topics selected together with the teacher.
Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination.
The acquired knowledge and understanding abilities and capabilities of practical application will be tested by addressing to the student at least two questions with the aim of assessing the actual knowledge of the norms and the related mechanisms of private and procedural international law.
Learning abilities will be tested by assessing the capability of using correct juridical terminology,the capability of explaining the meaning of specific expressions or concepts and of organizing coerently, adequately and in a reasoned manner the acquired notions.
