Learning objectives

1°- Knowledge and understanding
At the end of the lesson the student will know the chemical, physical and hydrological aspects of the rain water produced by the urban pavements.
He will know the innovative devices (UOPs) useful for reducing the pollutant release in the natural water bodies. He will know the main concepts about the climate change and its influence on urban drainage systems. He will be able to understand the concept of resilience with reference to urban drainage infrastructures.
He will understand the technical
terminology in the field.
2°- Applying knowledge and understanding
Ability to choose the best UOP device and the more appropriate urban pavements.
3°- Making judgments
The student will acquire the ability to outline the real problem to find the technically sound and cost-effective design solutions.
4°- Communication skills
On passing the exam, the student should have acquired sufficient correct use of the
language with regard to the topic specific terminology.
5°- Learning skills
The student should have acquired the basic knowledge of the discipline that will
allow him to learn independently the future developments of the discipline.

Prerequisites

The course covers the basics of Hydraulics and Hydrology that the student should have acquired in the bachelor's degree.

Course unit content

The course will provide specialistic contents on the qualitative aspects of the urban drainage water in order to develop strategies of resilience

Copies of the class slides.

Teaching methods

The course consists of a series of lectures and numerical exercises. The lessons
will be carried out using Power Point presentations copy of which is provided after the classes.

Assessment methods and criteria

1 - Concepts of sustainability and resilience
2 - Chemical, physical, biological and hydrologic aspects of rainfall-runoff in urban areas.
3 - Interactions between hydrologic processes.
4 - Transport and fate aspects in urban drainage: water chemistry, sediment transport, infrastructure materials.
5 - Control through unit operations and processes (UOP). Types, experimental tests, SOR theory, CFD modeling.
6 - Chemistry and loads related to design of UOPs for control, treatment and/or reuse.
7 - Wash-off of urban pavements. Flow limited events and mass limited events.
8 - The chemistry in permeable pavements.
9 - Urban hydrology and climate change: the influence of the climate change on the design of urban infrastructures.
