Learning objectives

Provide the student with an understanding of the nursing science-based Anglo-Saxon culture, through the experiences of the nurses during the Viet Nam conflict, when the scientific nursing practice is born and develops as we know it today. Provide the student with a defined understanding for the construction of a scientific article / nursing job, according to the parameters of the Anglo-Saxon world.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of the English language.

Course unit content

The elaboration and the structuring of the nursing scientific publications, through the testimonies of the Nurses engaged in the Viet Nam conflict, the first example of nursing assistance according to the parameters known and applied today.

Full programme

The Anglo-Saxon world has peculiar characteristics regarding scientific publications, especially for nursing. From this point of view the goal is to understand how it has evolved, for the nursing reality, such characteristics. How and in what way is written and expressed in the Anglo-Saxon world with regard to scientific publications. Through the reading and translation of testimonies from the Vietnam war it will be understood that the structural characteristic of Anglo-Saxon nursing scientific language is also found in those that are publications of professional experiences of lesser scientific nature. The music and slang repropose in forms often abbreviative and habitual use, words from which were born then the famous Anglo-Saxon acrons.

Teaching methods

Reading and translation from Italian into English of scientific texts and nursing testimonies (nursing experiences from the Vietnam war). Approach to reading and translation with artistic background music of the period relating to the conflict in Viet Nam and the related period in the United Kingdom. Translation of the aforementioned musical texts for comprehension through the linguistic slang used, words of common use concerning health, illness, suffering, addiction and more.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam with translation from Italian into English of the proposed scientific texts. Reading a text in English.
