Learning objectives

.The program is focused for educating the student on the fundamentals of General Pathology for understanding the diseases of livestocks: causes, pathogenetic mechanisms and morphological changes induced by regressive and inflammation. The is operated in one semester using IT teaching approach for theorethical lectures and practical labs (histo lab and necropsy room). In histo lab the student learns the methods for technicque for blood smear preparation, fixation and staining as well observation at light microscope. The student during the practical activities in necropsy room can observe the fundamental inflammatory and regressive lesions of organs of livestocks. The students also learn the methodology for sampling biopsies and shipping.D1 KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The student, at the end of the educational program, will be able to acquired the knowledge and ability to understand the causes, pathogenetic mechanisms of cell injuris and cell death and to know the morphostructural changes in acute and chronic inflammation as well evolution of pathological conditions and immunerespnse. Furthermore the student must have acquired basic knowledge on the genetic diseases, deficiency diseases and multifactorial diseases of livestocks.

D2 APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The student, at the end of the educational program, will be able to acquire the knowledge to demonstrate how to apply it for characterizing the pathological notions and skills within a context of tissue and organ elementary lesions. The student must also basic knowledge on the genetic diseases, nutritional deficiencies diseases, as well multifactorial diseases of livestock.

D3 MAKING JUDGEMENTS
The student, at the end of the educational program, will be able to identify sick conditions of livestocks.

D4 COMMUNICATION
The student, at the end of the educational program, will be able to expose clearly, synthetic in a simple scientific language a sickness condition of livestocks

D5 LIFELONG LEARNING
The student, at the end of the educational program, will be able to consult and understand, independently, scientific textbook and perform bibliographic research on specific topics.

Prerequisites

Recommended knowledge of anatomy, biochemistry and physiology.

Course unit content

The program is related to the fundamentals knowledge of General Pathology: morphological features and molecular mechanisms of cell growth, differentiation and adaptations,; cell damage and cell death, storage cell disease; causes of acute inflammation and related morpho structural changes; chemical mediators and systemic manifestations of acute inflammation with particular emphasys to fever; Causes and morphological features of chronic inflammation; Tissue repair; Nutritional disorders of livestocks; Genetic diseases; Degenerative and inflammatory diseases of skeletal muscle of livestocks. Cytological and histological methologies for studying cellular and tissular morphological changes; tissue sampling .

Full programme

Concept of disease. Physical, chemical, and biological causes of disease. Cellular injury and cell death. Adaptation, intracellular accumulations (atrophy, hyperthrophy, hyperplasia, dairy cow steatosis, etc). inflammation (characteristics of the exudative inflammation and granulomas), tissue repair. Environmental and nutritional pathology of livestock.Genetic diseases, degenerative and inflammatory diseases of skeletal muscle of livestocks.

Bibliography

The PowerPoint lectures presentations are provided by the teacher to the students. Power PoinT lectures are the main learning support for the student. The student must also improve her/his knowlegde with the recommended textbooks of General Pathology followed cited:
G.M PONTIERI : Patologia generale e Fisiopatologia generale (per i corsi di laurea in professioni sanitarie), II edizione, Piccin.
•McGavin M.D., Zachary J.F.: Patologia generale Veterinaria, 4th ed., 2008 Elsevier Masson – Milano.

Teaching methods

Theoretical lectures (39 hours ex-cathedra) are supported by Power Point slides presentation. Practical activities (8 hours) will be performed in histo lab and in necroscopic room. Student are do not exceed up to 15 per group

Assessment methods and criteria

Examination is performed through a written or oral exam (student choice): 1) ORAL EXAM: Five questions are asked about the main lectures topics. The final vote depends on the overall assessment of the answers to the five questions. 2) WRITTEN TEST: 5 open questions on the main lectures topics. The time last 1 hour; Each question is worth 6 points. The results of the written test are communicated by the teacher to the student within 7 days of the examination.

Other information

The teacher is available for tutoring (lectures, examination) setted up via email.
