Learning objectives

The course aims to describe the chemical and technological aspects of the industrially processes designed for the production of some of more important organic intermediates, also evidencing the factors which contribute to decide the choice of the more economically convenient industrial process.

Course unit content

<br />The more important derivatives of base organic intermediates: ethylene, propylene, butadiene, isobutene, butene-1, butane, C5 hydrocarbons, benzene, toluene, xylenes, methanol.<br />Oxidation products of base intermediates and their principal derivatives: industrial processes for the production of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, ethylene glycol, acetic acid and acetic anhydride, vinyl acetate, oxidation and ammoxidation of propylene, production of adiponitrile, production of maleic anhydride and 1,4-butandiol, production of adipic acid, oxidation of benzene to phenol, production of phtalic anhydride, terephtalic acid and dimethylterephtalate, oxidation of methanol to  formaldehyde.<br />Alkylation processes of benzene with ethylene and propylene: industrial production of ethylbenzene and cumene, industrial processes for the production of styrene, phenol, caprolactam.<br />Hydration products of olefins and their derivatives: production of ethanol and isopropanol, production of acetone, industrial processes for the production of methyl methacrylate.<br />Industrial processes for the production of dichloroethane and vinyl chloride.<br />Industrial processes of nitration of benzene and toluene, processes for the production of aniline and isocyanates.
