Learning objectives

The course aims to provide the cultural means and the basic operational tools to understand and address the problems of designing and implementing building organizations.
The lessons concern the illustration of the general principles of architecture and the analysis of the fundamental aspects of the design, with particular reference to the role of materials and construction techniques in the configuration of the built environment.
Practical exercises concern the reading of building types, materials and construction details that are characteristic of architecture.

Course unit content

The building design in relation to the intervention scales and the different contextual scales: the historical fabric, the urban suburbs, the new building areas.
Types and methods of intervention on the existing building heritage.
The typological analysis of the built environment: the relationship between urban form and building typology; analysis and classification of building types.
The concept of quality of the urban environment: criteria for defining the various scales of design, construction and management. The components of architecture: evolutionary characters of the relationship between function, form, materials and construction techniques from the classical age to the modern period.
The technical and expressive skills of the main building materials: brick, c.c.a., steel, examples of significant achievements.
Techniques and materials for energy saving.
Eco-sustainable design.

Teaching methods

The teaching methods used in the classroom in relation to the training objectives consist of lectures, design workshops, seminars and visits.

Assessment methods and criteria

The methods used to evaluate the student are: oral exam, preparation of a project report with typological comparisons.
As an example we report the criteria for an examination that includes written test and oral exam:
Check project 50% including:
- Knowledge and understanding
- Apply knowledge/ exercises (competence)
- Original applications of the theory (independent judgment)
Oral examination 50% including:
- Knowledge and understanding
- Communication skills
