Learning objectives

The student at B1 level can understand the main points of speech where clear standard language is used, and can express his or her opinion on familiar topics within the personal sphere simply and coherently. He or she can report an experience or event, describe a situation, dream, hope or aim, and supply reasons and brief explanations about an idea or project.

Course unit content

The aim of the course is to help students pass the English language test based on reading, writing and Use of English at B1 level of the CEFR. The course is aimed at students who can understand simple communication and have acquired English language skills at A2+.

Teaching methods

AA 2016-2017 the course is delivered online and can be accessed on http://elly.cla.unipr.it/2015 using University of Parma credentials nome.cognome@studenti.unipr.it. The course includes video lessons and exercises with automatic correction of answers. The pass mark for the exercises is 60%.

Assessment methods and criteria

The English language test is computer based and is modelled on the Cambridge English B1 examination Preliminary English Test (PET). It consists of multiple choice questions on reading, writing and Use of English. The pass mark of 60% is calculated solely on the number of correct answers, with no marks subtracted for missing or incorrect answers. The use of dictionaries, grammar reference books etc. is not permitted.
N.B. Students doing the Laurea magistrale degree must complete their second year before taking the language test.

Certificates can be recognized to replace the language test for any number of credits within a degree course. Certificates issued by boards or institutions not expressly named in the ruling are not valid to replace the university language test.
