Learning objectives

Aims:
At the end of the course students should be able to demonstrate the following skills:
• To know, to think, to argue about the theoretical contents of the Intercultural Pedagogy,
• To know how to apply the knowledge gained using it to direct their own practice, to discuss it, support it and make a revision when needed.
• To be able to compare the methods used by the educational agencies in the planning of actions and interventions in an intercultural and transcultural perspective.
• To know how to examine the living conditions, the identity construction processes of children of foreign origin present in various capacities in Italy and Europe by identifying the issues relating to their reception and social mobility, set through an educational and intercultural project.
• To know how to design educational interventions in multi and intercultural contexts.
• To update autonomously their training even with the benefit of scientific and updated research on the subject of interculturalism.

Course unit content

Purpose:
The course gives a first overview of the concepts - criteria and principles - that interest and problematize the setting of Intercultural Education in the current local and international socio-cultural context. In particular, it intends to transmit the knowledge to analyze and understand the multicultural worlds and the complexities of their transformations, as well as the knowledge to analyze and understand the conditions and the social changes through educational management of cultural differences.
Topics:
1. Multiculturalism, intercultural and transcultural.
2. Stereotypes, prejudices and training processes.
3. The encounter with the other. The glance, the face, the interests.
4. The racism: attitudes and behaviors, and historical, social and cultural dynamics that lead to racist attitudes and behaviors.
5. Immigration and learning processes.
6. The school and the Education of the encounters: diversity, difference and valuing differences.
7. The pedagogical models: assimilation, separation and integration.
8. Intercultural education: construction and evaluation of educational paths in school contexts.
9. The overcoming of ethnic conflicts.
10. Scientific researches on intercultural issues.

Purpose:

Frontal lectures, interactive lessons with presentation of films and topics to be analyzed, work in small groups.
