Learning objectives

The course will help you master those linguistic skills that you need to effectively communicate in workplace settings. You will consolidate your reading and listening skills, and you will be able to understand the gist as well as the lexico-grammatical and syntactic features of a number of texts belonging to business discourse. Emphasis will be placed on the language of accounting. You will also improve your ability in writing short texts (e.g. reports describing graphs and business emails).
In particular, you will
• consolidate your linguistic competence at an intermediate level
• hone your receptive skills
• acquire a knowledge of the vocabulary and discourse of English for Business Purposes
• apply the knowledge gained in class to write cohesive/coherent texts.

Course unit content

During the course Business English (CLEA) you will read, listen to and discuss a variety of texts belonging to the domain of economics, business and management. For this reason, it is fundamental that you bring the set book to class: ‘Market Leader (3rd edition) –Intermediate’ by D. Cotton, D. Falvey & S. Kent (Pearson).
You will also revise grammar areas such as
- articles
- verb tenses, imperative forms, modal verbs, the passive voice
- relative clauses
- if-clauses.

5. a monolingual dictionary of your choosing (e.g. Oxford or Cambridge).

Teaching methods

Teacher-fronted lessons and practical activities. If you attend classes, you will be expected to do your homework and actively participate in all classroom activities (working in pairs and groups).
It is strongly recommended that you come to class regularly.

Assessment methods and criteria

You will sit a written test including the following exercises:
A. Vocabulary
B. Reading comprehension
C. Writing skill
D. Listening comprehension
The exercises will refer to the domain of economics, business and management.
