Learning objectives

<br />The aim of course is to complement the basic hydraulic concepts acquired in Idraulica AB. The main theoretical topics concern steady and unsteady flows in prismatic and natural rivers, sudden transitions and steady flows with increasing or decreasing discharge.

Course unit content

<br />Steady gradually varied flows with constant discharge. Uniform flow concepts: normal depth (also in compound channels with variable roughness), critical depth, total energy, specific force. Classification, analysis and computation of flow profiles in prismatic channels and natural rivers. <br />Sudden transitions. Hydraulic jump, contractions and expansions, flow through bridges and constrictions. Channel junctions, bottom drops, curves. Local erosions.<br />Steady gradually varied flows with increasing or decreasing discharge. Governing equations, lateral inflow and outflow.<br />Unsteady free-surface flow: Hydraulic unsteady flow models: De Saint Venant hypotheses and equations; initial and boundary conditions for sub- and supercritical flows; methods of solution: characteristics, finite difference (explicit and implicit), Courant-Fredrichs-Levy stability criterion. Rapidly varied unsteady flow: dam-break flood waves, positive and negative waves due to sluice gate operation.
