Learning objectives

The aim of the course is to provide basic concepts about the epidemiological studies and the role of epidemiology in health and research.

Course unit content

Basic concepts of epidemiology. At the end of the course, students should be able to describe and explain how epidemiological methods are used to identify public health problems, to plan and evaluate public health interventions. Students should be able to read and interpret a scientific paper.

Definition, scope and uses of epidemiology
The role of epidemiology in planning and evaluating public health interventions.
The sources of the statistical-epidemiological data.
Descriptive epidemiological measures.
Ecological studies, cross-sectional studies, case-control studies, cohort studies, experimental studies.
Epidemiological study design.
Bias in Epidemiology.
