Learning objectives

At the end of the module, students will master all the features of Excel, and they will be able to create complex worksheets, useful for analyzing and solving typical engineering problems.

Prerequisites

The module does not have any specific prerequisite.

Course unit content

The module focuses on the use of Excel as a tool to solve classical engineering problems. Starting from basic concepts, all Excel’s potentialities will be analyzed, with specific focus on data analysis, filtering, presentation and synthesis. Specific attention will be given to the use of Logical, Research and Financial formulas, that can be used to realize complex worksheets, functional and easy to be used. Lastly, the most advanced features will be analyzed, including: (i) conditional formatting, (ii) Pivot tables, (iii) objective research, (iv) scenario analysis, (v) the solver and (vi) macro creation using VBA.

Teaching methods

The module will be carried on in the computer lab. All the topics discussed will be presented in an interactive way, using explanatory and / or concrete examples. All files (data and solution files) developed in the computer lab will be available in advance , together with lecture notes and power point lessons prepared by the lecturer.

Assessment methods and criteria

In order to pass the module, students must take an oral examination of about 45 minutes. During the test, students will answer questions of general theory and / or they will solve practical exercises. The oral examination includes, also, a discussion of three project-works (of which one related to the use of VBA) assigned by the teacher and developed in groups of 3 to 4 people.
