Learning objectives

The specialistic course of Italian philology will allow the student a comprehension of the critical methods of philology and the variants critic. In particular the study of the works of Vittorio Sereni will give an understanding of the fundamental connection between the literary work and its historical and linguistic context

Prerequisites

A good knowledge of the history of the italian language and of the history of italian literature is required.

Course unit content

After an introduction to the methods and the purposes of the author philology, the course will focus on the three collections of Vittorio Sereni, Frontiera, Diario d’Algeria and Gli strumenti umani. The frontal lessons will be dedicated to a punctual analysis of the constructive ratio of the collections and to some analysis of singular poems, with attention on the various stages of the manuscripts redaction so as to study their genesis and correction process, and to appreciate their importance both from the historical and the stylistic and linguistic point of view.

Teaching methods

Besides frontal lessons introducting the work of the author and the historical and literary context, practical exercise on reading and transcribing from the autographs will be undertaken. Each student will be required to produce a short essay ,consisting of the transcription of one or more poems and evaluation of the variants, to be discussed during the last lessons.

Assessment methods and criteria

The final proof will consist of an oral examination in which the student will be required to demonstrate a basic knowledge of the period taken into account,of the work of Sereni in general, regarding both the contenutistic, metrical, stylistic and the textual aspects. A student demonstrating incomplete knowledge of the literary context or of the philological method will not be judged sufficient. On the final evaluation will be considered: sufficient (18-21) the student able to manage properly the concepts and terms of the discipline, quite good or good (22-26) the student who demonstrates an autonomous ability of reflection, very good (27-30 with laude) the student who will have improved his knowledge through the study and analysis of critical editions.The final evaluation depends also for attending students on the work discussed in itinere.
