Integrated course unit module: THEORY AND TECHNIQUES OF JOURNALISTIC LANGUAGE

Learning objectives

Knowledge and understanding: The teaching of Journalism and New Media will enable students to critically analyze communicative activity - even through new media - of political parties and movements and to learn the basics and main styles political journalism today. This knowledge will be acquired through targeted educational tools - lectures, case studies, essays, articles, and bibliography - and will be screened with an oral exam.

Applying knowledge and understanding: The study of political communication techniques and main styles used by current and past political journalism - also taking into account tv and new media techniques - should allow students to learn the practical basis of political journalism. This knowledge, coupled with the practice represented by internships, should provide writing skills and ability to organize material suitable for writing newspaper articles.

Making judgments: At the end of the course, students, based on theoretical, practical and lingustical knowledge acquired, should have acquired the ability to analyze the communication strategies of political actors, to make independent judgments.

Communication skills: At the end of the course, students should have achieved the ability to analyze clearly the communication strategies of political actors and be able to argue about them in a scientifically appropriate. Also, if aided by a targeted training, should be able to master the main styles of political journalism writing and produce correct work from the journalistic point of view.

Learning skills: Students should have gained a capacity for analysis and methodology to be used in practice in the field of political journalism and be thorough - and expanded -, on their own, either from additional theoretical contributions, and thanks to new data collected in the field.

Prerequisites

It is desirable, in order to access the course, a basic understanding of the history, genres and language of journalism.

Course unit content

Course Title: "Political journalism and infotainment, new media, social networks"

The course will cover the evolution of style and content of political journalism (in Italy and in the world) and infotainment (which is now the main genre of television journalism, that is, the practice of journalism through which the majority of citizens of developed countries receive news and political forms a judgment) and opportunities offered by the new media, the development of the platforms of Web 2.0 and social networks. All while keeping in mind the communicative activity of sources - that is, the political parties and movements - which now go directly to voters skipping the journalistic mediation. Part of the course will focus, of course, in the general theoretical framework of journalism and new media.

Teaching methods

The teaching consists of lectures with the use of multimedia tools. In order to encourage student workers (who have always problems in frequency) will use, as every year, a site with the summary of my lectures and in-depth material. The final evaluation is out of thirty.
