Course unit partition: INTERIOR AND EXHIBITION DESIGN

Learning objectives

The student should be able to:
- include in the projects (developed in the Laboratory) multiple points of view on the issues of composition and dwelling discussed in the supplementary teaching.
- explain how the questions submitted can be verified progressively in the project, generating autonomous reflections.
- identify and explain the relationships between the parts of the proposed architecture and the town in which the building is on (the historical centre of Parma), as well as the relations established between spaces, and between rooms the furniture and between the inside and the outside of the residences designed.
Knowledge and understanding of the following topics:
a) Theory and practice of architecture
b) Contemporary Town
c) The culture of living between main contractors, architects and specific places

Applying knowledge and understanding
Know how to interpret the link between the living cell, its aggregates and the surrounding urban fabric.

Making judgments
Develop a self-reflection and critical skills of reading and judgment drafting design, by comparing and studying different points of view on the issues raised.

Communication skills
Skill in the exposition of the themes of architectural design, through an oral dialectic, which will be reflected in the project that takes place in the Laboratory.
Learning ability
Ability to increase the knowledge that develop in the Architectural Design Laboratory.

Course unit content

The supplementary module offers a training action complementary to that of the reference Architectural Design Laboratory (Prof. Costi).
The discipline "Interior Design" has been investigated by a preferential point of view: the house, a central theme in the research of the Modern Movement. Apparently contrasting with the name of the educational module, the attention focused to different dimensional scales (from the équipement to the urban fabric) to capture the theoretical issues contained in exemplar architectures, which often underlie also precise “ideas of city”. In fact, the compositional themes (such as the "relationship between the parties", the "figure-ground relationship", etc.) emerge in the practice of architectural design so often independently by the scale of intervention. Some museum exhibits, such as the Abatellis Palace in Palermo for example, show minute details linked to the urban context or autobiographical factors. The visitor is involved because he recognizes meanings and correspondences.
Lessons integrate prof. Costi’s work in the laboratory, in which students project houses and service in the "pre-existing environments" of Parma’s historical centre.
The theoretical contribution is divided into communications related to three themes:
• The experience and research project carried out by the "School of Palermo" in the relationship between buildings and geography (House, city and landscape: the contribution of the School of Palermo; Giuseppe Samonà, Giancarlo De Carlo, U. Di Cristina, A.M. Borzì : The "Program Plan for the historic center of Palermo" (1979-82); Pasquale Culotta and Giuseppe Leone works).
• Museums by Carlo Scarpa (Canova Plaster Cast Gallery, Possagno, Treviso; Museum of Castelvecchio, Verona; Abatellis Palace, Regional Gallery of Sicily, Palermo).
• Inside and Outside. Continuity vs fragmentation in the project of the wall. Study of "contradictions resolved or highlight" between inside and outside, cases of "simultaneity of contexts" and interactions between "room and town".
