Learning objectives

In addition to an introduction to concrete translation questions using authentic examples and practical exercises, the course offers an overview of the history of German translation and theoretical reflections on it.

Prerequisites

To successfully take this course, advanced proficiency, equivalent to the third year of study, in German is required.

Course unit content

<br />The course provides an introduction to translation-related problems using concrete examples and practical exercises. During the course, selected extracts of authentic German texts are analysed, annotated and translated. <br />
<br />
Practical exercises are accompanied by an introduction to the theory and history of translation. From the translation of the Bible by Luther, up through the major translations of the 20th century, the milestones in the process of cultural integration through translation are presented.

Teaching methods

<br />The course is divided into a practical section of Italian translation from Italian into German and a theoretical section on historical aspects of translation and reflections on this topic.
<br />Student proficiency is evaluated through a written translation exam and an oral exam covering the theoretical-historical aspects of translation.
