Students are required to know the basic construct of the psychology of health and to apply them to the context of hospitals and care centers

Course unit content

HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY: Introduction to the matter. Historical notes, problems and prospects.
DISEASES AND “CARE”: The concept of “disease”. The bio-psycho-social model. Illness and disease. Social and mental representations of “illness”. Illness behaviors. Stress, illness and coping strategies. Conflict and emotions in the practice of care. Quality of life and health status: concepts and assessment tools.
THE DOCTOR-PATIENT RELATIONSHIP: Historical and cultural kinds of doctor-patient relationship. Interview models in medicine. Psychodynamics of the care relationship. The problem of "adherence" to treatment. Help professions and "burnout". Interpersonal relationship, context and process in the practice of care.
PLACES OF CARE: Health institutions and informal systems of care. Communication in the hospital. Institutional roles and professional cultures in the hospital. Family, caregiver and informal care systems.
THE CONSTRUCTION OF HEALTH: Lifestyle and health promotion. Communities, organizations, and health.
