Course unit content

Cultures: integration and conflicts

Full programme

The course aims at promoting critical reflection on the concept of citizenship as legal status and citizenship as daily practice, this last perspective being common to native-born people, immigrants and people in transit, searching common solutions to daily common problems in the same context.
Rights and duties are complementary. So it is not possible to speak about personal and social liberties without defining duties and responsibilities. Every culture resolves conflicts, emphasises differences, discusses meanings.
In a pluricultural situation analyzing and reflecting is not enough. It is necessary to pose questions, make visible and understandable the hidden meanings.
Identity, belonging and citizenship
- Culture and rules: what happens in uniform and solid cultures. What happens in cultures in reality.
- Contact between cultures: interations between people of different ethnicity, language, religion, with gender differences, different family tradition and status, different food and body cultures.
- Self-representation and Hetero-representation: how we sse ourselves and how others see us. We know ourselvs through our knowledge of others.
- Emphasize our common points, make visible the differences.
- Stories of individuals and groups in migration.
- Analysis of working, institutional, recreational and religious contexts.
- Social importance of formative-informative connexion, in formal and informal contexts.
- The infant school as space of identity construction, privileged site for building intercultural paths.
