Learning objectives

To offer a synthetic overview of the key concepts of the discipline, in order to understand the specific contribution of the geographical approach within an interdisciplinary perspective

Course unit content

The course aims at offering the basic notions related to the contemporary geographical research. The first part of the course will be devoted to a synthetic overview of the most important fields of investigation in current geographical studies, with a particular emphasis on the most urgent global problems. In the second part we will discuss topics such as the sense of belonging to places and the new forms of citizenship. Within a panoramic overview of the current international situation, we will study the new emerging tendencies at the local level, the new meanings acquired by the regional scale, the weaknesses of the traditional national geopolitical level, the growing importance of the international institutions.

A third text will be a fiction work chosen by the student, who will presenta geographically oriented reading (landscape desciptions, treatment of spatial themes, role of geographical maps in the development of the plot, etc.)
