Learning objectives
The goal of the course is to understand how our contemporary era offers a general situation of transformation from an economic, social, political, cultural, environmental and urban standpoint which develops in part in a linear manner, but in part represents splits within a basically homogeneous phase.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of contemporary events, as covered in the secondary school curriculum, is assumed.
Course unit content
<br />Political involvement in the age of major transformation <br />

The course is divided into two units: <br />

Unit A:: The age of great transformation. (5 credits). (20 February to 29 March) <br />
<br />
Using Europe as the reference point, a historic profile of the 1800 and 1900s will be given, with special attention to the birth, development and transformation of the features of contemporary society as a mass-based society (mass production and consumption, mass culture, mass politics). <br />
<br />
Unit B:: Mass-based society, ideologies and political involvement in the age of major transformation. (5 credits). (10 April to 17 Mary) <br />
<br />
Birth and development of political parties seen as tools of mediation between a changing society and national institutions; they will be examined in relation to the different conditions of development of the phenomenon of associations, the spread of the right to vote (and the struggle to achieve this), the definition of the need to represent material and idealistic interests of new social groups. <br />
