Learning objectives
In-depth knowledge of political thought and of its connections with the corresponding historical and political contexts.
Analysis and comprehension of classical political texts.
Critical evaluation and comparison of different interpretations of the texts.
Discussion of contemporary problems using methodologies and techniques elaborated by the philosophical and political traditions.
Writing of papers about political thought and political problems.
Course unit content
The first lessons deal with the definitions of the concept of representative democracy and of a democratic State.
The second part of the course focuses on the theory of democracy during the first half of the 20th century.
The third part discusses some reflections regarding democracy during the 1980s.
The fourth part explores the development and problems of democratic States in the last twenty years.

Teaching methods
During the lessons we will read and comment on some passages by Kelsen, Bobbio and Crouch.
Students can also submit reports on topics agreed upon with the teacher.
Assessment methods and criteria
The exam will consist of an oral interview.
