Learning objectives

— Being able to suggest or prescribe adequate postoperative analgesia.

— Being knowledgeable about techniques of regional anesthesia, the appropriate drugs, and the recognition and management of complications.

— Being able to start treating patients for medical emergencies arising during dental procedures.

— Being able to optimize the tailor the approach to patients’ different physical and psychological characteristics, also in terms of choice of anesthesia and sedation.

Course unit content

— Physiology and Pathophysiology of acute and chronic pain; clinical pharmacology and therapeutical approaches to pain treatment.

— Basics of regional anesthetic technique for dentistry; clinical pharmacology of local anesthetics.

— Management of medical emergencies in dental medicine: anaphylaxis, syncope, cardiac arrest.

— Dentistry and coexisting disease: coronary artery disease, diabetes mellitus, chronic respiratory failure, psychiatric disturbances.
