The course aims at offering a theoretical foundation for the use of literary sources in the study of geography, together with the abilty to apply these concepts in the analysis of specific case studies
Prerequisites
Knowledge of the ftheoretical foundations of cultural geography; familiarity with the the scientific lexicon used in human geography
Course unit content
The course will offer an overview of the interdisciplinary encounters between geography and literature. The spatial turn that recently affected social and human sciences produced a renewed interest towards space among scholars of literature and cultural studies. The course will illustrate the tradition of geographical studies focused on the use of literary sources, both in prose and in poetry. The literary texts, in fact, can be fruitfully used to understand the perception of places, the sense of attachment to a place, the feeling of being an insider or an outsider, the very sense of identity of an individual or a society. Together with these theoretical approaches, some case studies illustrating the relationship between literary works and places, both in the Italian and in the international context, will be offered.
