Learning objectives

Students have to acquire foundamental elements of General Chemistry, starting from composition of matter till to the atomic and molecular basis of chemical reactivity and to the correlations between physico-chemical properties and structure.

Matter and energy; substances and relevant properties; internal energy; first law of thermodynamics; entalpy; aggregation states of matter; atoms and elements; ions and molecules; isotopes and radioactivity; atomic mass; mole and Avogadro's number; exercises on the concept of mole; periodic table; metals and non-metals; periodic properties of the elements; valence and nomenclature; binary, ternary and quaternary inorganic compounds; entropy and second and third laws of thermodynamics; Gibb's free energy G and equilibrium constant K. Models of the electronic structure of atoms; the chemical bond; Lewis' acids and bases; coordination compounds; weak interactions and aggregations states of matter; ideal gas and real gases; solutions; concentration of solutes; colligative properties; colloids; solubility equilibria in aqueous solution; dissociation of salts; Acids and bases; ionization of water; pH; buffer solutions; reaction rate and it dependence on temperature and concentrations of reagents; catalysis.
