Learning objectives

The specific goals of this course may be summarized as follows: to understand the fundamentals physical chemical principles; to introduce students to the basic practice of laboratory measurements and computer-assisted data acquisition and analysis by a scientific spreadsheet.

Thermochemistry. The determination of the heat of formation of a compound under constant volume conditions or constant pressure conditions. The vapor pressure and heat of vaporization of liquids. Conductivity of solutions. Applications of conductance measurements. Applications of e.m.f. measurements. Determination of the rate of a reaction by conductance measurements.

PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY CALCULATIONS
Thermochemistry: the determination of the heat of formation of a compound under constant volume conditions or constant pressure condition. Phase Equilibrium. The vapor pressure and heat of vaporization of liquids.
Conductivity of solutions. Applications of conductance measurements.
Thermodynamics of an Electrochemical Cell: calculation of free energy, enthalpy and entropy of reaction. Determination of thermodynamic quantities from e.m.f measurements.
Determination of the rate of a reaction.
EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY
Determination of heat solution by solution calorimeter. The measurement of the vapor pressure of a liquids as a function of the temperature by method of isoteniscope. Applications of conductance measurements. Application of e.m.f. measurements. Potentiometric titrations. Determination of the rate of a reaction by measuring the absorbance of a solution at various times and at various temperatures. Determination of the rate of a reaction by conductance measurements.
