Learning objectives

Overview of main telecommunication systems, with particular attention to wireless systems.

Course unit content

Introduction to wireless networks. Characterization of the wireless propagation medium. Contention access methods (with fixed resource assignment and with random access). Communication noise. Cellular network plannin. Personal area networks (PAN). Evolution of cellular systems from 2G to 3G: GSM, GPRS, UMTS. Wireles local area networks (WLAN): 802.11 protocols and real cases.
Laboratory classes with Opnet network simulator.

Direct theory classes (2/3 of the course). Laboratory classes (1/3 of the course) with final project to carry out with Opnet simulator.

Assessment methods and criteria

Intermediate exam on the theoretical part at the end of the first two months. Final project with Opnet.
