Learning objectives

The course aims at providing to the students the knowledge of organic stereochemistry and various stereo- and enatioselective reactions.
The fundamental principles of green chemistry will be discussed in order to evaluate the eco-efficiency of a chemical process. Particular attention will be devoted to heterogeneous catalysis.
The course aims to give information on the chirality of organic molcules and on stere- and enetioselective reactions

Course unit content

Stereoisomers due to center, axis, plane of chirality and elicity.
Chirooptical methods. Polarized light: polarimetry and circular dicroism (CD). Octant rule. Application of circular dicroism to conformational and configurational studies.
Study of dynamic phenomena by NMR spectroscopy. Time scale in NMR, IR and UV spectroscopies. Coalescence temperature. Conformational analysis by NMR: thermodynamic and kinetic aspects
Determination of enantiomeric composition by NMR methods :chiral derivatizating agents, chiral solvating agents, lanthanide shift chiral agents.
Origin of chirality in nature. Chirality and biological effects.

Sustainable development and eco-compatibility of chemical processes. The twelve principles of the Green Chemistry.
Evaluation of the eco-efficiency of a reaction: yield, selectivity, atom economy, E-factor, Q factor. Ideal synthesis. New reaction media: water, supercritical fluids, ionic liquids. Heterogeneous catlysis. Examples of different heterogeneous catalysts: zeolites, clays, supported catalysts.
