Learning objectives

The goal of the course is to provide the theoretical knowledge beyond the functioning of the various dosage forms for therapy in order to understand the way for optimizing the therapeutic efficacy of an active pharmaceutical ingredient as well as to provide the students with the theoretical and practical knowledge required for a proper compounding

Course unit content

The course concerns the modern approach to the medicine production, the composition and the characteristics of the various dosage forms as well as of the peculiarity of certain administration routes. The content of the course are also relevant to the skills for the modern and correct approach to the pharmaceutical compounding with particular emphasis to the preparations of various dosage forms and the responsibility of the Pharmacist in this respect

First module:
Metrology
- Good Compounding Practices
-Compounding a doctor prescription
-National price of medicines

Unit operation: grinding, mixing; dissolution, filtration.

Compounding the following dosage forms:

Powders and granules;
Capsules;
Solutions;
Emulsions;
Suspensions;
Ointments;
Suppositories.

Second module:
• Drugs, dosage forms and medicines.
• Pharmacopoeia and Formulary
• Administration way and pharmacokinetics.
• Biopharmaceutical Classification System

• Unit Operation: Crystallisation, Distillation; Drying; Lyophilisation Sterilization; granulation.

• Pharmaceutical excipients.

• Dosage forms: powders; granules; capsules, tablets, suppositories drops, syrups: suspensions; emulsions; ointments; eyewash; injectables; aerosols; herbal remedies.
