Learning objectives
The aim of the course is the acquisition of a solid language competence in written and spoken Spanish. Upon completion of this course the student will have acquired:
- knowledge of the characteristics and peculiarities of Spanish in a practical way by developing the four language skills to the level C1 of the European Framework of Reference for Languages.
- the ability to communicate and apply their knowledge independently and in daily communication contexts, as well as to handle complex and professionally qualified situations.

Course unit content
The course aims to provide students with the technical and cultural tools necessary for a autonomous approach to translation issues, expanding their theoretical and linguistic skills in order to promote a more conscious process of continuous and independent learning of the Spanish language.
Specifically, the course includes the study of:
-the concepts and specialist lexicon of translation: general and specialized translation; the plurality of the concept of 'equivalence' (meanings, translations and connotations); the notion of "contextual selection"; the forms of translation (interlingual, intersemiotic, intralingual); linguistic communication and semiotic noise; "distances" (diachronic, cultural, diatopic);
- linguistic, stylistic and semantic analysis of Spanish authors and texts (also in Italian translation) aimed at the acquisition and analysis of morphology and syntax concepts previously discussed.
Finally, the course gives priority to a contrastive approach with the Italian language in order to expand some specific morpho-syntactic aspects, and strengthen the student’s translation skills.

Teaching methods
The course will take place through lectures and practical exercises in class. The course also includes a cycle of 9 hours of self-study based on selected materials and to be carried out in the Multimedia Lab located in the Area di Lingue e Letterature Straniere.
Assessment methods and criteria
Evaluation of knowledge and skills is by final written and oral language exams.
The final test is divided into:
- Written examination
. grammar test on grammar topics treated during the course. Translation from Italian into Spanish. This test is a prerequisite to have access to the oral examination.
- Oral examination
. the student must be able to understand the texts, authors and formal issues related to the linguistic phenomena dealt with in the course. Questions in the oral exam aim at verifying knowledge of the topics covered in the course, as well as the ability to apply such knowledge. A part of the examination takes place in Spanish in order to verify oral competence corresponding to the level C1.
For the oral examination, a fail is determined by lack of knowledge of the contents, incorrect use of specific language, and inability to speak in Spanish at level C1. A pass (18-23/30) is determined by partial knowledge of the contents, minimum capacity of application and/or re-elaboration of knowledge, and the demonstration of having acquired a level of linguistic competence showing some features of the C1 level. An evaluation between 24-27/30 and 26-27/30 can be reached thanks to a acceptable knowledge of content, ability to apply such knowledge, an articulated and appropriate use of language. The highest threshold (from 28/30 to 30/30 e lode) is obtained when the student proves to be in possession of a good or excellent level of knowledge of the content covered in the course, autonomous application of this knowledge, and an original and creative approach to the subject.
Other information
Practical language activities with native language lectors will take place during both semesters.
