Learning objectives
The course aims at analyzing some principles of Regional Economics to better understand the problems of competition between firms and territories and the changing role of the state in these dynamic contexts. The reconstruction of a theoretical framework and presentation of case studies enable students to develop self-references within the world where they will work.

Course unit content
After in-depth analysis of dynamic regional contexts and choices of local firms, also through theoretical models, the study will focus on the role of State role, from producer to regulator and promoter of economic development. In particular,
• Theme I: The evolution of local economic and politician order. Interpretive summary
This topic provides an overview of the main economic events that occurred in Italy since 50’.
• Theme II: Structure of production and development. Several tools for reading the current economic situation. This theme identifies the determinants of economic development and illustrates various ways to read and understand their influence in the process of determining local economic performance.
• Theme III: New Frontiers of local development.
This theme brings about new interpretative profiles of local development through the identification of various types of capital.
• Theme IV: Principles of planning and territorial marketing
In this issue, the main aspects of planning and territorial marketing are analyzed and are offered some concrete examples.
• Theme V: Industrial Structure and Local Development
In this issue, there are a lot of information about the locational decisions of firms and how these impact on the results and regional policies.

Assessment methods and criteria
Presentation and discussion of case studies:
-the student, either alone or in a small group, will deepen the study of themes that will be agreed with the teacher. In front of the class, they must submit the results of this activity and will be evaluated for consistency, accuracy and originality in dealing with up to five points/30.
Written exam:
-it will consist of some open questions on the whole program covered during lessons (25/30).
Oral supplementation:
-the student can integrate the score obtained in the two tests with an oral exam, to be agreed with the teacher.
