Learning objectives

The aim of the course is to provide suitable knowledge on the synthesis, the characterization and the chemistry of metalorganic compounds in order to understand the role of the metal in the key steps of the catalytic reactions, in synthesis and industrial productions.

Course unit content

Metalorganic compounds: classification and electronegativity considerations; energy, polarity, and reactivity of the M-C bond.
Main-group metalorganic compounds: general methods of preparation; compounds of alkali metals (group 1); compounds of groups 2 and 12; compounds of the boron group (group 13); compounds of the carbon group (group 14); compounds of the nitrogen group (group 15); compounds of selenium and tellurium (group 16); compounds of copper, silver, and gold (group 11).
Metalorganic compounds of the transition elements with: sigma-donor ligands, sigma-donor/pi-acceptor ligands; sigma, pi-donor/pi-acceptor ligands; metal-metal bonds and transition-metal-atom clusters.
Organometallic catalysis in synthesis and production.
