Learning objectives

The course means to offer an introduction to the German literature between the 19th and 20th century by means of one of the most significant literary themes of that period. The students are asked to identify the main aspects of the representation of the big city and the following evolution of this theme by studying the individual works.

Course unit content

The course addresses one of the most significant themes at the change of the 19th to 20th century, the big city. Starting with the first examples of naturalism, continuing on works of the expressionism, the most important aspect is rappresentated by the works of the Weimar republic. The works to be analysed are mainly lyrics or short texts in prose.
