Learning objectives

The aim of the course is to complement the basic hydrologic concepts (acquired in the course “Idrologia”) and to develop the main topics concerning basin management plans, mainly with reference to flood defence. To complete also the knowledge of flood control measures in mountain streams and in plain rivers.

Prerequisites

Hydraulics, Hydrology.

Course unit content

Hydrology complements. Flood volume estimation; Synthetic Design Hydrographs (SDH) for gauged and non-gauged sections.
Movable-bed models. 1D models: Exxner equation; morphological models for flood routing and sediment transport; Debris flows; Local scouring around bridge piers and abutements.
Fish passes. Types of fish passes, design and dimensions.
Mild slope rivers settlement and floods control. On-line and off-line flood control reservoirs. Level-pool routing equations and its numerical solutions. 2D shallow water numerical numerical models for hazard maps evaluations.
