Learning objectives

Course Aims
After the course, students should be able to:
1. formulate answerable questions
2. understand which types of study design are most appropriate for which types of clinical questions
3. search effectively for evidence
4. critically appraise evidence for its validity and applicability
5. appraise a research paper
6. assess whether research studies are using the best approach to statistical analysis
7. apply the evidence to individual care

Course unit content

The course “Introduction to the research methodology” is intended to serve as an introduction to evidence-based medicine and practice. It is aimed at the students of the Course of Physiotherapy in order to initiate them to the knowledge of critical appraisal and experience in the practice of evidence-based health care.

Course Materials and preparation
Students will receive course material, as pdf, EBM packages in diagnosis, prognosis, therapy/prevention, quality of care, systematic reviews appraisal sheets . They will also receive appropriate background readings, information about relevant textbooks and software tools to help them practice EBM

Teaching methods

Course Format
The Course is a mixture of plenaries and small groups in which students will practice and develop and test their EBM knowledge and skills. Time will be provided for searching, study and the establishment of working groups.
The workshops start during the first academic year and develop during the whole duration of the Physiotherapy Course
