Integrated course unit module: GEOLOGICAL MAPPING AND FIELD ACTIVITIES

Learning objectives

By articulated field activities the student will test itself ability in the geologic and geomorphologic surveys related to field data acquisition, sampling, structural framework, quaternary mapping covers ecc. The professor superintends these activities and provide with observations, advices and field checks for data and results improvement.

Prerequisites

Consolidated knowledges of Sedimentary and Structural Geology, Geomorphology and Geological survey.

Course unit content

Field mapping and the study of the outcropping rocks and debris covers are specific and distinctive skills of Geological Sciences students. Accordingly, the CdS activated the teaching course of Field Activity, to verify under the supervision of a professor, the ability of the students to autonomously apply what they learned in classrooms by performing field mapping work in specifically selected areas.
In particular, once the field area will be assigned to the student, he/she will be provided of the tools necessary for autonomously carrying out the work, both in the field and in the laboratory. Such a work will include: - bibliographic and cartographic search to build up the geographical, geological, morphological and climatic state of the art knowledge of the area; - search for topographic maps and remotely sensed material; lithological and paleontological data acquisition, including sampling; analysis of the stratigraphic and geometrical relations among the exposed rock formations; mapping of the main tectonic elements; mapping of debris covers and definition of their origin; laboratory analysis of the dataset acquired in the field. All the activities carried out by the students will be included in a geological report that will contain graphics, drawings, pictures and geological cross sections.

Full programme

Field activities is a test of geological-geomorphological survey. The knowledges and basic informations are acquired in previous courses attended or take by student.

Teaching methods

The teacher controls the activities of geologic survey during all the week and provides with observations, advices and checks for data improvement. Moreover the professor helps the organization and the elaboration of geologic data related to final geologic report. The evaluation of survey field test and report represent the mark for Field activities examination for a students couple.

Assessment methods and criteria

The valuation of this geological field test happen in two moments: the first related to the preliminary knowledges and real ability in the field activity (precision in the acquisition geological / morphological data and mapping, inherent observations, ecc.); the second related to the elaboration of geologic data and final report.
