Learning objectives

Knowledge and understanding:
At the end of the course the student will know about qualitative techniques in use today for the recognition of functional groups in the compounds, and for the chemical and structural characterization of the substances; he will know some synthetic routes for the formation of new materials for advanced technology applications.
Applying knowledge and understanding:
At the end of the course the student will have developed the ability to associate some chemical and physical characteristics of the substances, such as color, absorption of radiation, structure, with the presence of some specific groups within their composition. He will know how to identify certain functional groups with appropriate investigation techniques.
Making judgments:
By the end of the course, the student will have the tools to choose and critically evaluate an analysis of materials.
Communication skills:
By the end of the course, the student should be able to clearly present the experimental results of chemical analysis.

Prerequisites

A solid background in chemistry is recommended.

Course unit content

We recall some basic concepts of general chemistry such as the connection between the structure of matter and the chemical and physical properties.
